Homemade Brown Sugar

Sharing is caring!

Brown sugar is something we always buy but I can make it myself if I need to. Learn how to make light to dark brown sugar with only two ingredients. All that is needed is sugar and molasses. My homemade brown sugar is usually on the dark side because I love the rich molasses flavoring. I use this brown sugar in my cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies.

How to make brown sugar

Making homemade brown sugar is very easy. I often wonder why I never tried this sooner. All I use is organic cane sugar and unsulphured molasses.

When buying molasses, I look for dark and unsulphured because it is made from mature cane sugar that has less preservatives. I wouldn't recommend blackstrap molasses, as it tends to be too strong and bitter. While light molasses is ok, I would need to use more of it in this recipe due to its mild flavor.

For this recipe, we will make 1 cup of brown sugar. Double, triple or quadruple as needed.
