• Strawberries sliced on dehydrator tray

    Dehydrated Strawberries

My kids love strawberries. I often dehydrate strawberries to make strawberry chips. Finding ways to keep them delicious is a must. I either freeze or dehydrate strawberries when there is a sale or they are in season. We do buy them out of season but they never taste as good. We will eat dehydrated strawberries plain, on cereal, or even blend them up for strawberry powder. One of our favorite snacks is pink puppy chow, mixing in a lot of strawberry powder. Dehydrating strawberries take up less space than in the freezer and can be added into many recipes. First you will need strawberries, a food dehydrator, knife and cutting…

  • Egg shells in bowl

    Egg shells for chickens

Chickens get a lot of nutrition from their food but we can offer more. I like to add extra supplements in their diet by putting crushed eggs shells and grit in the run and allowing the chickens to free range whenever possible. I do not add the shells or grit to the main food bin. I have two different areas where they can find the extra supplement the chicken is looking for. Not all chickens need extra calcium and some chickens find it when free ranging. The calcium helps the chicken produce an egg and the egg to become stronger. It isn't recommended to give chickens extra calcium until it…

  • Sourdough biscuits in cast iron pan

    Sourdough biscuits

Warm, flaky buttery sourdough biscuits are perfect alone or with some hot sausage gravy. These sourdough biscuits are good for breakfast or added to a side at dinner. My children sometimes add butter and eat as a snack. I love how easy and fast they can be made with just a few simple ingredients. These sourdough biscuits can be made same day or long fermented. I usually bake same day, as I forget to start them the night before. All you need is unbleached flour, sourdough active or discard, butter, salt, baking powder, baking soda, milk and honey or sugar. The sourdough will not be the leavener in this recipe…

  • Carton of colorful chicken eggs

    Meet the chickens

We would like you to meet our few backyard chickens that are still fairly young. They were born in February 2024 and started laying around June/ July 2024. We built a chicken coop out of a shed we didn't use and they have a long run to play in. We also move them around in a mobile run or chicken tractor that we built as well. They also love roaming around the yard, getting into the gardens and seeing what is new around the house, Since these girls started laying eggs, we have a beautiful basket full of different colors and sizes. We like being able to save eggs during…

  • thick and chewy chocolate cookie broken in half on top of another cookie

Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

These delicious cookies are thick and chewy with a rich molasses flavor. Every time I go over to my relatives, they request these thick and chewy chocolate chip cookies. My whole family finds it hard to resist these amazing goodies. When I make cookies, it is usually the same day I travel or else they seem to disappear before I bring them to my destination. If you can make them last, the cookies do keep well for a few days in an air tight container. You can also freeze the cookies for later. I love all kinds of cookies. Although, these chewy chocolate chip cookies are my favorite and usual…

  • sliced zucchini bread made with freshly milled flour

Lemon Zucchini Bread with Lemon Icing

This bread is perfectly sweet and just a hint of lemony goodness. I love making lemon zucchini bread, especially when I have an abundance of fresh summer zucchini from the garden to use up. This is a recipe you can make and freeze or enjoy the same day. My family always seems to devour it like cake before I can freeze it. First thing I do is bring out the kitchen scale, bowls, spatulas, measuring cups and spoons and ingredients. Measure out flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder in bowl. Set aside for later. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a bread pan with parchment paper or grease…

  • Active and rising sourdough starter

    How to make sourdough starter

Sourdough starter is an easy way to rise baked goods. Full of good bacteria and great for your health. All someone needs is flour and water. I use sourdough starter very often, from bread to cookies to crackers and much more. Sourdough has a very nice tangy flavor that I just love. It is also a money saver compared to buying instant yeast packets. I learned how to make my own sourdough starter over 5 years ago when I wanted to get away from store bought bread. After looking up many recipes and tried everything from potatoes to instant yeast packets to rise the bread. I liked the breads I…

  • freshly milled sourdough bagels

Sourdough Bagels made with Hard Wheat

I have been milling my own wheat for awhile now. When I found out about the chemicals and toxins in the store bought flour, I knew I had to make a big change. Thankfully the processes of milling flour is easy. Only one more step was added to my baking steps. Freshly milled flour has more nutrients and minerals than the flour from the store. This is because, when milling flour, the flour looses its nutrients from oxidization. Oxidization is a normal process food goes through. Think about a banana turning brown or an apple turning brown after being cut, the same thing happens for grain when being cut or…
